A cooking holiday is a great way to get to know the unique cuisine of a particular country or region. However, today many people also want to try to make their favourite dishes at home, and with a little help it's possible to get really authentic results time after time.

Italian Cuisine

In the UK, Italian cooking has established itself as one of the nation's favourite culinary imports. As well as being relatively easy to make some of the most popular dishes, Italian food is well known for its unique flavour combinations, as well as its nutritional value.

Today shoppers can find all the ingredients they need to make authentic Italian food in their local supermarket, with everything from a full choice of extra virgin olive oils to a wide selection of fresh pasta on offer.

So, apart from the obvious favourites such as 'spag bol' and simple penne dishes, what else can you make to get a true taste of Italy in your own home?


Of course, one of the great things about pasta is its versatility. Not only does it come in all shapes and sizes for simply boiling to make the perfect al dente accompaniment to a sauce, it also lends itself to making excellent baked dishes.

Lasagne is possibly the best known of all and in fact the wide, flat pasta shape is possibly one of the oldest as well.

The dish is basically made up of layers of lasagna pasta with other ingredients interspersed between them. Sauces, typically including ricotta cheese, tomato sauce, and meat (usually ground beef or pork) are spread between the sheets of pasta and it is then baked in the oven.

Other main flavourings used are typically wine, garlic, onion, and oregano.


If you are looking for a lasagne recipe there are plenty online which give simple and clear instructions on how to make the perfect dish.

Often you might find that you already have most of the ingredients in your kitchen. Lean minced beef, a tin of chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, grated cheese and pasta are all essential, as is making a simple white sauce. You can even use ready made packet sauces and still get a really authentic flavour.
